how does herpes affect your sex life?

i would like to hear from people that have the disease.....okay i am pretty sure i have genital herpes. i went to the doctor to get it checked out and later found out that the culture stick they used was expired so they were unable to get any results. i have been too afraid to go back. when it comes it's only 1 very small sore, so small i had to point it out to the doctor. i am in a long distance relationship and i told him about it because i really care about hi. he told me that it was a big deal but that he would stick by my side and we would get through this. my question is what is the best suppression medicine to take and how much does it cost, do you guys always use protection or just around the time you get an outbreak, and did the virus have any effect on you having a child( did you have unprotected sex or did you have to do ivf, and did you have to have a c-section or was a natural birth an option)
