is it okay to have sex while on period cycle of birth control?

my period is always very short and light, and my boyfriend and i want to have sex on about day 5 of where my period should be. i'm on kariva birth control, and on the blue pills for this week. if i have sex with my boyfriend are the bills still working? and will i be protected? or should i wait until i start taking the white ones again?
