Part, 1981, Excalibur





Alrighty folks. This film gets posted and removed now and then, so don't expect it to be up here for too long. But against my better judgment, I decided to finally post "Excalibur" per one of my subscriber's wishes (subscriber# 100 or 101, to be precise). This is a very pivotal film from my childhood, because it took the bare-bones concepts of the tales of King Arthur and took them into a more serious (and adult-like) direction, with the appropriate sex and violence that would accompany a story with lots of strange twists that kids like me never understood BEFORE we saw this film...like how King Arthur and Morgana were brother-sister AND how incest led to the birth of a devil-child like Mordred. Much like "Mad Max" and "The Road Warrior," this was one of those films I had to sneak around and catch when my parents weren't around, watching it on the once-fabled The Movie Channel, which tried very much to be more like Channel Z...or a thinking-man's HBO, I guess. Anyway, in this first part of the film, we start way before King Arthur was born, going back to the time of his impetuous father, Uther Pendrangon (played brilliantly by Gabriel Byrne, one of many Irish actors in what's supposed to be a very English fable). Uther seeks Merlin's help in obtaining the Sword of Power, Excalibur, to help end the constant feuding between warlords and bring one king for one land. Instead, Uther's own avarice gets in the way.
